Five things for you to watch this weekend

Tymon Smith MYTH & MOGUL: JOHN DELOREAN NETFLIX

He may be most remembered in the annals of popular culture for the car he gave his name to, which played a starring role in the Back to the Future series, but in the 1970s and 80s, John DeLorean was “the King of Detroit”.

This three-part docuseries uses interviews with family members, associates and archives to paint a rich portrait of the complexities of a man who once seemed to hold the future of the automotive industry in his hands, before he dropped the ball in a scandal that involved drug traffickers and a court case straight out of a Hollywood script.

TOP SECRET UFO PROJECTS DECLASSIFIED NETFLIX

It’s somewhat clunky titles pretty much tell you all you need to know about this sixepisode series. It draws on recently declassified US government files and interviews with the eccentric members of the UFO community to try to convince us that, as the X-Files told us back in the 90s, there is indeed something out there.

TED LASSO SEASON 2 APPLE TV+

Jason Sudeikis’ sleeper comedy hit, about a US football coach who travels across the pond to take up a job coaching a British soccer team, returns for a typically optimistic second season, fresh off 20 Emmy nominations for season one. Even the most cynical of viewers will find it hard not to be charmed by its just toodarn-hard-not-to-like characters and hilarious fish-out-of-water situations. New episodes are added weekly on Fridays.

THE LAST MERCENARY NETFLIX

Jean Claude Van Damme’s late career tongue-in-cheek revival continues with this comic action adventure. The Muscles from Brussels plays a former secret service agent brought out of retirement when he is forced to come home to France and help save his estranged son from the clutches of drug dealers.

LONG STRANGE TRIP AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

The Grateful Dead and the legions of dedicated fans they’ve cultivated over the course of their five-decade career remain a mystery to many outsiders. This docuseries examines the story of the American jam band

known for their live performances of lengthy instrumental jams in exhaustive detail and tries to get to the bottom of what it is about the Dead that has inspired so much devotion from audiences. You don’t have to be a Dead head to enjoy it but if you are there are things here that even you might not have known.
